Attorney Oliver Wendell Nelson grew up in Rockford and graduated from Rockford East High School. He is married to his lovely wife, Mary Jo, and he has two daughters, Sarah and Stephanie.
He received his undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in History and Political Science from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. Upon graduation, he served two years in the United States Army, including one year in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division, where he was awarded a Bronze Star for Combat Action.
He earned his Juris Doctor (law degree) from the University of Illinois College of Law, Champaign. Mr. Nelson is a third generation attorney. His grandfather began practicing law before the turn of the century, and his father and uncle also practiced law in Rockford.
Mr. Nelson is a very active seminar speaker and has counseled thousands of clients in the areas of Estate Planning and Trust law.
His area of concentration for over 39 years is Elder Law, with an emphasis on various strategies designed to preserve and protect his clients’ assets and avoid the expense of Guardianship and Death Probate proceedings, qualifying for VA pension benefits, and Medicaid Spend-Down. Legal services include Revocable Living Trusts, Medicaid Income Trusts, Medicaid Qualification, Life Planning with an Elder Care Coordinator, Powers of Attorney for Healthcare and Property, Living Wills or Declarations, and the purchase or sale of residential real estate.
He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Winnebago County Bar Association Estate Section, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).
